Not all NFL teams are named after cities. Besides the Tennessee Titans, there are the New England Patriots (named after an area – formerly the Boston Patriots), the Arizona Cardinals (formerly the Phoenix Cardinals), the Minnesota Vikings, and the Carolina Panthers (playing in Charlotte, North Carolina). In addition, just because a team has a “city” name, several play at stadiums outside the city (although in the metro area of that city). Buffalo Bills – Orchard Park, New York. Miami Dolphins – Miami Gardens, Florida. Los Angeles Chargers – Carson, California. Dallas Cowboys – Arlington, Texas. Washington Redskins (the “Washington” is for Washington DC) – Landover, Maryland. San Francisco 49ers – Santa Clara, California. AND – we have BOTH “New York” (used to be the city – perhaps now the state) teams (AFC Jets and NFC Giants) which play in East Rutherford, New Jersey and “share” Titans shirts.

The Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Bengals, Ravens, & Jaguars could all compete for a playoff and/or Super Bowl berth in 2023, and I think even the Cleveland Browns & Pittsburgh Steelers would probably be in the mix as well. All of these teams have good or great starting QBs along with at least somewhat good defenses. That means that best-case scenario, the Titans are set to be approximately the 12th-best team in their own conference, and there’s a huge gap between their Titans shirts and whoever’s at #11.

After two miserable seasons in Tennessee as the Beverly Hillbillies, I mean Tennessee Oilers, the team rebranded and started selling Titans shirts prior to the 1999 season, the one that ended a few inches shy of a game-tying touchdown in the Super Bowl. If you want to know the reason they left Houston, it’s because owner Bud Adams was an asshole who had alienated so many people in Houston that he couldn’t convince the city to give him a new stadium to replace the aging Astrodome. After he left town, Houston got the Texans as an expansion team and built them a modern stadium.
