The African diaspora was, in fact, a large segment of the foreign immigrants in Hawai’i in the early 19th Century. Aside from the sugar plantation labor, many were capable sailors as freemen and found Hawai’i to be welcoming. And they did influence culture. I think it’s somewhat muted, in music, due to the similarities in the roots of their rhythms and vocal uses and how strongly the Hawai’ian music influenced the foreigners. So the fusion would be more subtle and literally a world apart from how they fused with the Spanish/Portuguese and North American populations. Much of the music of Hawaii was also influenced by classical music and the music of the Mexican cowboys, the paniolo, that were brought to Hawaii to tend to the king’s cattle. Paniolo brought guitars to Hawaii and their teaching (or, in reality, lack of teaching) led to the creation of the slack-key guitar style. Like OP said, there is almost certainly some amount of influence from Africa but the style was developed pretty much entirely by Hawaiians.”
