I’m around a lot of Panthers fans living in North Carolina. Cam Newton’s career as a starting QB is almost definitely over and he’s more harmful than beneficial as a backup QB. Nearly everyone in the league knows those two things, which is why he barely generated any interest the two times he hit free agency last year and this year. That’s the main reason why I feel that for Newton, the best QB in Panthers history, today’s loss to the Buccaneers is utterly disappointing. But for this team to even be a serious playoff contender, they have to keep Christian McCaffrey on the field, and that’s starting to prove problematic. He’s one of the best and most dynamic offensive weapons in the game, but right now he’s like a high end sports car—great when well, but you gotta keep putting it in the shop. I don’t see them being able to sustain the pace they’ve opened with. They could be a borderline playoff team, and -yes- the playoffs are a completely different season. But the playoffs are where teams that have been there before and are built for the playoffs shine.
