Denver had a stalwart starting LCB in Chris Harris Jr. for nine seasons, a 4x Pro Bowler who was the biggest part of the Super Bowl-winning “No-Fly Zone” secondary, but we really did him dirty by not giving him a new deal to close out his career in Denver. Harris signed with the Chargers to be a starting CB there. Still, we were able to recover from that loss by using a high draft pick on Michael Ojemudia, a 3rd-round pick in the 2020 draft, to start immediately on the outside and develop into a star with in-game reps. So far, Ojemudia has been a hit despite an up-and-down rookie year. He will most definitely continue to be a starting cornerback for at least one or two more seasons, which should help in his development. He has star potential. Aside from him, our only other truly competent cornerback from 2020 was Bryce Callahan, a carbon copy of CHJ who had an absolutely excellent 2020 season while returning from a foot injury that kept him out for all of 2019. Bryce Callahan is a slot CB by nature, and played mostly in the slot this season. But he also had a significant number of reps on the outside due to injuries around him, and still kept up admirably. Had he not gotten injured late in the season, Callahan would’ve definitely made the Pro Bowl and/or All-Pro teams. That was it for our CB group though, as only Ojemudia and Callahan are sure to return as starters next season. Aging veteran AJ Bouye, who was originally a Week 1 starter alongside Ojemudia and Callahan, missed most of the first half of the season due to injury and then much of the second half due to a suspension. He carries too much of a cap hit for his 2020 performance and we could always release him and draft someone in the early rounds of the 2021 draft (i.e. Caleb Farley) to start with Ojemudia on the outside. Undrafted rookie Essang Bassey replaced Callahan in the slot when Callahan got injured, but it’s unlikely that he’ll see much of a large role anytime soon because he and Callahan have the same skill set. And the likes of Duke Dawson and De’Vante Bausby are nothing more than special teamers. Our cornerback group wasn’t particularly great this season, but the prospect of fans wearing Denver Broncos Logo NFL Football Hoodie to celebrate a top four of Farley, Ojemudia, Callahan, and Bassey in 2021 seems to be good.
