I think that by trading for Joe Flacco, the Broncos knew that they were getting a marginally worse version of Case Keenum, except at a cheaper cap hit and overall salary. That’s why the Broncos drafted Drew Lock in the second round this year, so that he could either compete with Flacco for the starting job right now or take over later in the season. The plan really isn’t for Joe Flacco to succeed at all; rather, it’s just pretty much to avoid having to suffer the major cap hit they were going to have with Keenum still there. The real plan is for Flacco to hold down the fort for a few games or maybe half a season until Drew Lock is ready. He is the future at QB now, and the blueprint should be for him to succeed and sell thousands of Denver Broncos American Flag Hoodie, not a borderline backup QB like Joe Flacco. I’m with Charlie Cheever on this overall; Manning may have needed to be The Man, and in San Francisco, he would have had the expectations of a 13-3 team last year plus the Montana/Young ghosts to deal with.. so maybe that’s a reason he passed up a clearly better team to go to Denver. Manning’s deal is kind of interesting. He didn’t get $50 or $60 million upfront; he’s actually got a five year, $96 million deal and a closet full of Denver Broncos American Flag Hoodie, but if he is injured, Denver can get out of the contract without huge damage. It’s essentially a pay as you go type deal. That was big of Manning, and should help Denver build around him. He surely could have insisted on a bigger upfront rake — even if he is coming off a severe injury — because he had three serious suitors.
