RB Joe Washington was a superb backfield receiver and kick returner as well as running back. In 1978, he held out and forced a trade to the Colts. In his first game, Washington almost single-handedly defeated the heavily favored Patriots on MNF. Washington would later win a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins. Imagine if Fouts had a backfield receiver like Washington to use. But the most significant contract dispute was Fred Dean’s. In 1981, Dean held out. Prior to the 5th game, the Chargers traded Dean to the San Francisco 49ers. Dean’s impact was immediate. The 49ers faced the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. A year earlier, Dallas crushed the 49ers 59–14. In this game, Dean simply obliterated Cowboys QB Danny White, sacking him four times. San Francisco won 45–14. Dean would pick up two Super Bowl rings with the 49ers. Buchanan played solidly in 1979–80 but in 1981–82, Buchanan, like the rest of the Chargers secondary, got torched and the Chargers finished last in pass defense and total defense. Inside Sports joked that the Chargers, in 1982, finished near the top in run defense because teams were too busy passing.
