John Elway had both a powerful father (Jack Elway was a successful college head coach) and a fallback plan. John made 150K in Short A for the Oneida Yankees in the NY-Penn League and was likely to play in the big time by 1984 (if not sooner) if he hadn’t played in the NFL.
