Tevin Coleman had just left with an injury and Devonta Freeman, a lesser blocker, was in the game. It was his responsibility to pick up the outside rushing linebacker and he completely missed. With the score 28–20 and a little more than 3 minutes left, the Falcons had the ball on the Patriot 25 yard line – we’ll within Pro Bowl kicker Matt Bryant’s range. On 2nd down, Ryan was sacked (the one criticism I can give him in this game was taking too many sacks instead of throwing the ball away), pushing the Falcons back to the 35. From here it would’ve been a 52 yard field goal, still comfortable for Bryant. That would’ve given Atlanta an 11 point lead, 31–20, with under 3 minutes to go. Tough for even Brady to overcome. However, a holding call on Jake Matthews pushed the Falcons back another 10 yards to the 45, out of field goal range. The 3rd down pass was incomplete and they were forced to punt. Brady did the rest against an exhausted and tenative Falcon defense. Another play that was remarkable happened on this drive. Brady threw it over the middle, Alford tipped it up into the air. There were 3 Falcons and 1 Patriot (receiver Julian Edelman) around the ball. Edelman made an amazing catch and the ball was prevented from hitting the ground by defender’s limbs. I knew we were in trouble after that. Somehow, immaculate plays like that tend to go to the winning side, leaving us to soak through our Atlanta Falcons X Spider Man Design Shirt in a cold sweat.

I don’t think Ryan is the Falcon’s biggest issue, not by a longshot. He has plenty of talent, it’s just a matter of him being consistent, having a consistent offensive play caller as well as offensive unit (lots of drops already this season, including Mr. Everything Julio Jones…), and having a better defense. Some of Atlanta’s offensive issues have to do with the defense playing poorly.
